Depression

Depression Therapy Sessions for Women

Symptoms of depression can include sadness, lethargy, numb feeling, loss of interest in things that you once enjoyed, struggling with doing simple tasks. Depression exists on a spectrum; however, even if you suffer from “high functioning depression,” it can be a struggle to function under the weight of your symptoms. When I work with those struggling with depression, my first step is assessing for safety. When one suffers from depression, having suicidal thoughts can be a daily occurrence. I may help someone come up with a safety plan for when they are struggling with suicidal thoughts. If I feel that someone needs a higher level of care than I can offer, I usually refer them to someone who can help.

The second step is helping someone improve their daily function, meaning I help them get to a level where they are able to maintain their job, connect with others, and engage in their daily living skills. I do this by teaching coping skills as well as the concept of behavioral activation, which means when we take one small action, it can lead to positive feelings, which makes you want to take another step.

I also assess for a possible trauma background. When we are carrying unprocessed trauma, it can put us in a state of hyperarousal, which can lead to depressive symptoms. If this is the case, EMDR can be helpful in processing the trauma that is causing symptoms and creating a change in the core belief system.

What are the warning signs of depression?

Depression symptoms can often be challenging to catch. Each person experiences depression differently, so it’s all about recognizing alterations that seem inconsistent with one’s usual self. Here are some warning signs that can help identify the presence of depression:

  1. Consistent sadness: A distinctive signal can be lingering sadness happening more intensely than the occasional blues.
  2. Losing interest in hobbies or social activities a person typically enjoyed: The lack of joy in hobbies or social engagements a person used to find excitement is a gentle yet profound signal that depression might be developing. At Healing Renewal, we understand this is a sign that it’s time to talk with a professional before it can escalate.
  3. Easily frustrated or irritable: It’s human to feel irritated or angry. However, when these emotions intensify or become the go-to response to minor disturbances, they usually have a deeper meaning. These intense emotional responses can often be the way depression masking itself.
  4. Feeling discouraged or hopeless: Depression can diminish the confidence and vision a person has toward their future. This perspective can lead to reckless behavior as the usual concerns about consequences begin to fade. These attitudes are a critical cry for help to seek professional support.
  5. Self-doubting and insecurities: One of the most painful signs of depression is the cycle of self-criticism and feelings of worthlessness. It can lead to persistent feelings of self-doubt that can become everyday habits. This cycle can profoundly affect a person’s life, urging withdrawal and isolation. At Healing Renewal, we understand that recognizing these feelings is a significant step towards healing.
